John --
 This Veterans Day, we pause
to honor and thank the brave men and women who have served our nation
in uniform. From the beaches of Normandy to the deserts of the Middle
East, and from humanitarian missions to the front lines of combat,
American veterans have dedicated themselves to the defense of our
nation and the principles it upholds. Veterans Day is an opportunity
to express our deepest gratitude for their sacrifice, commitment, and
resilience.
Veterans Day originated as Armistice Day on November 11,
1919, marking the first anniversary of the end of World War I. This
day, chosen for the symbolic armistice signed in 1918, was intended to
honor the courage and sacrifice of those who had served in "the war to
end all wars." In 1954, after World War II and the Korean War,
Congress officially changed "Armistice Day" to "Veterans Day" to honor
all American veterans, regardless of the era in which they served.
Since then, November 11 has been a day to recognize and
thank veterans across all branches and all generations, from World War
I to present-day conflicts.
The contributions of our veterans go far beyond their time in
uniform. After returning home, many veterans continue to serve their
communities in countless ways—through public service, leadership,
volunteer work, and as steadfast friends and family members. Their
dedication to service is a testament to the values they hold dear,
values that define our country and inspire us all.
Veterans have left an indelible mark on our nation’s history
and culture. They are woven into the fabric of our communities,
representing the strength, resilience, and unity that keep our nation
strong. They have faced unimaginable challenges and shown
extraordinary courage. Their experiences and sacrifices have helped
shape our nation’s freedom, safety, and democracy. Each veteran’s
story is a part of America’s collective story—a story of bravery,
perseverance, and love of country.
As we honor our veterans this year, we must also recognize
the responsibility we bear to support them. It is our duty to ensure
they have access to the resources and care they deserve, from quality
healthcare and mental health services to educational opportunities and
job assistance. Too often, veterans face challenges transitioning back
to civilian life, and it is our responsibility as a nation to support
them as they supported us.
Veterans Day is also a time to remember those who made the
ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. We remember them and honor
their families, whose own sacrifices are no less significant. The
freedom we enjoy today is possible because of their bravery and
selflessness.
Today, I encourage all of us to take a moment to reflect on
the sacrifices made by veterans and their families and to express our
gratitude. If you know a veteran, consider reaching out with a message
of thanks. Small gestures of appreciation go a long way in letting
veterans know that their service is not forgotten.
To all veterans: thank you for your service, your sacrifices,
and your enduring commitment to our nation. We honor you today and
every day.
