Today is officially the start of the United Nations’ COP 29 in Baku, Azerbaijan. After events in Egypt and the United Arab Emirates, COP 29 in Azerbaijan marks the third year in a row that the world’s most vital climate talks have been hosted by petrostates whose primary interest in decarbonization arguably is in stopping it. But that won’t deter us from urging negotiators to make clear plans to phase out fossil fuels and transition to clean energy as quickly as possible. Between this year in Baku and next year’s COP 30, world leaders will be making some major decisions that affect the entire planet and the lives of future generations. Make no mistake: Wealthy petrostates and fossil fuel companies are misleading the public, lobbying country leaders, and taking over the COP process, trying to stop progress every step of the way. It’s on us to keep up the pressure. Act now: Tell world leaders at COP 29 to phase out fossil fuels and transition to clean energy.
