I want to thank everyone for the kind words about yesterday's email. The media is full of people pointing fingers, blaming each other for what happened. That's understandable--we're all justifiably worried about what will become of the country and the movement that we've built. But what Michael is getting at is what we need to keep in mind as we steel ourselves for the next 4 years: We haven't lost until we forget what we're fighting for. If you're ready to take the first step in fighting the Trump-Vance administration's war on seniors, chip in $7 today.
-- MICHAEL'S EMAIL --
John,
We lost big on Tuesday. It feels terrible. Families are going to be separated, women needing abortions will die, and billionaires will get rich while the rest of us face Elon’s “temporary hardship.”1
But there’s a difference between having lost and giving up.
Trump and his billionaire backers want nothing more than for us to throw our hands up and concede he’s the King now. When we give up, that’s when they really win.
No one voted for Social Security or Medicare cuts. Donald Trump and JD Vance’s public statements were all promises to protect Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid―even though their policy papers and top advisers signaled that they plan to destroy our earned benefits.
Our task now is to make them keep those promises.
It’s a dangerous time. I can’t guarantee that we will win. But we haven’t lost. Not as long as we are still fighting.
A lot of people put everything they had into this election. I’m very tired. I’m sure you’re tired too. But we have 2 months until Trump is sworn in and we need to be ready.
So, if you’re ready to fight to protect our earned benefits, can you make a donation today to protect Social Security and Medicare?
We understand that not everyone can donate every time we ask―especially right now. We don’t say that enough. The difficult truth is that we don’t have billionaire backers. Social Security Works can remain nimble and independent because we are funded primarily by people like you, donating $5 or $10 at a time, making this your movement.
Even if you’ve never donated, and may never be able to, thank you for being in this fight with us.
Together, we will win.
In solidarity,
Michael Phelan
Social Security Works
P.S. Can you make sure we have the resources we need for the fight that’s coming after Trump is sworn in?
