Prevent workplace surveillance from invading your home. Here’s how …
John,
Millions of people across America have been required to work from home in an effort to halt the spread of the deadly COVID-19 pandemic. But some companies have been taking advantage of their employees by forcing them to use invasive surveillance technology that monitors everything they do. That’s not right.
Tech start-up Sneek provides employers with software that takes pictures of their employees every few minutes so their managers can see whether or not they are in front of their computer throughout the day.1 Other businesses log every keystroke their remote employees make.2 A few organizations even go so far as to monitor when employees print out their resumes from their home computers.3
These blatant privacy abuses are more than bad management; they are tools to erode your basic rights and keep you under the control of your employer. Amazon has been publicly accused of firing workers for speaking out and organizing against health and safety issues during the pandemic.4 Tesla has reopened a factory in California, defying orders from public health officials meant to prevent the spread of COVID-19.5 Workplace surveillance only will give these companies — and countless others — more excuses to destroy the lives and careers of any employee who advocates for better, safer working conditions.
We don’t have to live in a dystopian future where every keystroke we make and every bathroom break we take is recorded by our bosses to be used against us whenever necessary. But we have to take a stand here and now.
PS — If your employer is using surveillance tech to spy on you while you’re working remotely, please let us know by replying to this email. We'd love to hear about your experience.
