Friend,

Just two weeks after 22 people were massacred in the deadliest
mass shooting in Canada's history, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau
took decisive action to ban the sale of assault weapons. That's
what real leadership looks like.

When I stood up to propose a ban on the sale of assault weapons,
my friends told me I would receive threats of violence. They were
right. Political consultants told me I would face opposition from
fellow Democrats. They were also right. Republicans and militia
groups promised recall efforts. They tried and lost.

None of that mattered to me. It still doesn't. Banning the sale
of assault weapons and limiting high-capacity magazines reduces
the risk that Washingtonians will die in mass shootings. That's
what matters. Leadership means not worrying about the rest.

It's been 16 years since the federal ban on assault weapons
sales expired in the United States. In that time, the number of
mass shootings has skyrocketed and the number of deaths in mass
shootings more than doubled.

Military-style assault weapons are 11 times more likely to be
used in a mass shooting than a handgun. When assault weapons or
high-capacity magazines are used in a mass shooting, more than
twice as many people get shot. Compared to any other firearm, an
assault weapon is seven times more likely to kill law
enforcement.

Those are the facts. Here's another: students feel anxious about
mass violence in schools and believe leaders aren't doing enough
to protect their safety.

We need leadership in Washington state and in D.C. It is
absolutely critical that Congress demonstrate leadership and take
decisive action to renew the ban on the sale of assault weapons.

Assault weapons and high capacity magazines have been the tools
of choice in four of America's five deadliest mass shootings.

These weapons are designed to defeat our enemies on the
battlefield. They have no place on our streets and in our
neighborhoods.

Before the ban on assault weapons sales expired, we saw a
significant drop in gun violence. Since then, mass shooting
deaths have escalated.

We know these measures save lives

which is why I have been leading the fight to combat mass
shootings. I will keep fighting for a ban on the sale of assault
weapons until it passes.
