An important update from Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington

This is big.

Today, we won an appeal in the Emoluments Clauses lawsuit brought by Maryland and DC, with CREW as co-counsel. The full Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the case can proceed. Read our statement about today’s victory here.

CREW is proud to represent Maryland and the District of Columbia alongside Attorneys General Brian Frosh and Karl Racine and a powerhouse team of lawyers, and we look forward to continuing to fight alongside them for the ethical government that Americans deserve.

We should never have been in the position of states needing to fight in federal court to get the president to follow the Constitution. But President Trump’s systematic violations of the Emoluments Clauses and obvious conflicts of interest have left us no choice but to fight to compel him to follow the law.

President Trump can and should divest from his businesses today and stop violating the Constitution. From the very start of his presidency, Trump has engaged in outrageous and unprecedented corruption, opening himself up to countless conflicts of interest and violating the Constitution from the moment he took office. We’ve been fighting him in court ever since.

It’s been a long fight, but we keep racking up important victories, and that means something. It doesn’t always feel like we are winning when we see Trump’s rampant abuses of power, but his continued legal, constitutional, and ethical violations even in the face of our wins make it all the more important to keep fighting to hold him accountable. Our democracy depends on it.

Today, we can celebrate.

Thank you,

Noah Bookbinder
