Read Article 24-Hour Domestic & Sexual Violence Hotline: 703-237-0881 Supporting Community Members Hit Hardest By Crisis The majority of Doorways' clients are women and families. The majority of our clients are also people of color. Due to historical and systematic inequities, communities of color and women are disproportionately impacted by crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. That is why we must continue our equity work, and why your support of our clients is essential. Donate Now This crisis provides us an opportunity to build a more equitable society, but only if we understand how and why community members like Doorways' clients are being particularly impacted, and take steps now to create a brighter future. Women have been hit hardest by job losses in the pandemic. And it may only get worse. "Labor experts worry that even as states reopen, many workers, especially in leisure and hospitality, will continue to suffer cuts to hours, wages and tips. Low-wage workers, who are disproportionately female, will be the least likely to be rehired, economists say." Read Article "Despite some claims that the virus is a great leveler, its ravages are occurring against a backdrop of deep structural inequalities." —Arianna Huffington Racial equity should be at the core of coronavirus responses "Due to the impact of historical racism and ongoing forms of discrimination and bias, BIPOC communities (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) will more acutely feel the economic and health effects of this coronavirus crisis." Read Article How Your Support Helps Helping Jasmine Cope with Challenges and Uncertainty Today's climate has left most people nervous about the uncertainty that surrounds the future. However, for Doorways' clients like Jasmine, who do not have support systems, the challenges can feel impossible to overcome. Quarantine measures have resulted in Jasmine being unable to work, complete her GED, or find needed items in grocery stores for her family. On top of being anxious about attending to her child's needs during this challenging time, Jasmine is also anxious about money and making ends meet. The immense pressure Jasmine was experiencing made her start to feel overwhelmed and alone. "Although we are going through a shared experience (...), not everyone shares the same access to resources and safety nets." —YW Boston Thankfully, with your support, our HomeStart Supportive Housing Program staff have been able to continue their support of Jasmine and her family. In addition to ongoing check-ins, Jasmine's Client Services team continues to provide her family with services like counseling, as well as the resources she and her child need, such as diapers. Donate now to support families like Jasmine's. Your gift provides essentials services and resources, as well as the loving care and concern of a good neighbor reassuring our clients, "You are not alone."
