John,
I want to express my deepest gratitude to every single person who stood with us in this journey.
Although we didn’t secure the win we fought for, this campaign was never just about winning a seat in Congress; it was about standing up for our community, for our values, and for a future where everyone has a voice in Washington.
We have come so far together, building a people-powered coalition from the ground up, and we have achieved something extraordinary.
In 2020, we earned 47% of the vote against this incumbent, and in 2022, we gained even more ground, winning 49%. This campaign, fueled by grassroots support, raised over half a million dollars this campaign cycle, with 97% from small-dollar donors, while facing relentless attacks from big money and powerful special interests.
This election was also an eye-opener to the challenges our democracy faces.
Five days after launching this campaign cycle, AIPAC requested a meeting with me through a trusted community leader and political ally. I declined. I didn’t need to know their reasons; I understood AIPAC’s position on Israel, Palestine, and Washington, and it was at odds with my own.
While I declined AIPAC’s support, my opponent did not. Since October 7, 2023, the Congressmember has started taking AIPAC’s money and support.
In the final weeks, AIPAC’s SuperPAC United Democracy Project poured $2.2 million into this election, flooding our race with misinformation and lies to prop up the incumbent.
While these lies were intended to distort my record, my commitment to progressive values and people-centered policies has never wavered.
Through our work, we’ve pushed the Congressmember to adopt stances he once opposed – including student debt cancellation, marijuana legalization, and housing justice.
These are victories for all of us, and proof that when we organize for justice, we can win.
To our donors, volunteers, and supporters, I am deeply appreciative of the trust you placed in me and in this movement. Together, we’ve built something powerful, grounded in hope and determination for a brighter future for CA-34.
Let’s keep going, and continue to push and hold our Congressmember accountable, as he can continue to change with our collective voices.
Many of you who supported us because of our unwavering stance on Palestinian human rights and our demand for an end to the genocide in Gaza; and your contributions and support were statements of conscience, solidarity, and hope.
You stood with us because you believe that every human life has worth, and you refused to let the voices for justice be silenced. It is my hope that your unwavering commitment to justice will be heard by Congressmember Gomez, and that he will add his voice to yours to make the genocide stop.
To every partner organization that stood with us, thank you and your devoted membership for aligning yourself with our mission. You made this campaign possible, and together, we’ve created a movement that cannot be ignored.
My deepest thanks go to my core team and every single volunteer who dedicated their time, energy, support, and love to this campaign. Your dedication and sense of community made this journey possible, and I am honored to have worked alongside such passionate and resilient people. This campaign’s impact and success are a testament to each of you.
Even though we may not have won this election, we have achieved something more long-lasting: we’ve shown that when people come together, they can create a mandate for change. Your top concerns – affordability, housing, homelessness, reproductive justice, climate action, the genocide in Gaza, ending endless wars, community health, seniors, and more – are what motivated me every single day.
I hope these priorities will guide the Congressmember’s actions as he continues in office.
After six years and three consecutive campaigns, I am ready to embrace a new chapter and regain a personal life I’ve set aside to run for office.
Looking ahead, I am excited to continue working as a public children’s court attorney for parents and families here in LA County, representing and defending their needs and keeping them together. I will always advocate for an end to economic injustice, corporate influence, and performative politics. And while I may not run for this position again, I remain committed to the causes we championed together.
Let us continue to organize, educate, and mobilize for the world we know is possible.
Thank you, CA-34. Let’s keep moving forward, together.
David Kim
