This week, Americans witnessed a historic election.

Not only will President Trump be returning to the White House as the 47th President of the United States with JD Vance as his Vice President, but the Senate and likely the House have both shifted in favor of conservative majorities as well.

This is an incredible American comeback story and Heritage Action can’t wait to hit the ground running in 2025. Together, we can maximize this opportunity and deliver real, lasting results for all American people.

In 2021, Heritage Action launched its first-ever state advocacy campaign to secure and strengthen state election systems. With an initial investment of $10 million in eight states Heritage Action successfully supported 50 election integrity bills that were ultimately enacted across the county in 21 states. These measures included:

  • Voter I.D. requirements for mail-in ballots
  • Banning the use of private money to fund election operations
  • Improved signature verification
  • Additional protections against mail ballot trafficking

These measures helped to instill faith and confidence in our elections and had a real impact on boosting the integrity of one of our most sacred rights as American citizens–the right to vote.

But there is more work to be done. Many states still rank poorly on our election integrity scorecard. Yet the past three years and this election have proved that progress on this issue is possible. Heritage Action will continue to work in the coming years for even more success in ensuring it is easy to vote and hard to cheat – and we cannot do it without your help.

Many of Heritage Action’s very own Sentinels took it upon themselves this election cycle to fight for conservative policy policies by running for and winning elections. Their leadership is a reminder that the backbone of American conservatism truly is the grassroots and the people who give themselves to the betterment of our country. Here is a list of just a few of their successes:

  • Arizona: Sentinel and Rep. Michele Pena is poised to successfully defend her seat for the state house in Arizona’s 23rd district.
  • Georgia: Sentinel Noelle Kahaian won her race for Georgia State House District 81.
  • Georgia: Sentinel Randy Hough was re-elected to serve on his local school board.
  • Missouri: Sentinel Cathy Jo Loy won her race for state house in Missouri’s 163rd house district.
  • Nevada: Sentinels David Gibbs and Julie Hereford were influential in voters approving Question 7 - a proposal requiring voter ID. It passed with 73% support, bringing it one step closer to becoming law.
  • Oklahoma: Long time Sentinel Mark Chapman won his race for state house in Oklahoma's 12th house district.
  • Texas: Sentinel Hillary Hickland won her race for state house in Texas’ 55th house district.
  • Utah: Sentinel Lisa Shepherd won her race for state house in Utah’s 61st district.

Additionally, hundreds of Sentinels worked the polls in dozens of states to ensure that all ballots were lawfully cast. Without poll workers, observers, and watchers our elections simply couldn’t function. Thank you to everyone who made November 5th possible.

We hope these examples inspire you to continue to engage in your community. It really does make a difference.

All of this news should bring us hope for the future. But the real work of making a conservative ideas a reality starts now. Now that the election is over, here is where our attention must turn towards.

The Looming Budget Fight

Before Congress left to campaign in their districts and states in October, they passed a continuing resolution (CR) to avert a government shutdown. The CR extended government funding from October 1st until December 20th, at which point the federal government will shutdown unless Congress approves more funding.

Next Tuesday, Congress will return to Washington D.C. to pick up where they left off and determine their priorities for the remainder of the year.

Unfortunately, this situation creates a difficult scenario for the American people. With a government funding deadline set just before Christmas, this creates a strong incentive for members of Congress to pass a bloated omnibus which may be filled with last minute spending measures from lawmakers who just lost their seat and want one final shot at shaping policy.

Heritage Action will work to hold members accountable and advocate for a spending plan that puts the interest of the American people first rather than outgoing officials.

The Senate: Out with the old, in with the new

When the Senate returns, their first order of business will be to elect the next Senate majority leader.

Sen. Mitch McConnell has announced his retirement from leadership after serving as the Senate Republican Conference leader since 2007, including serving as the majority leader from 2015-2021, making him the longest serving Senate party leader in U.S. history.

On Wednesday, November 13th, Republican Senators and Senators-elect will gather to vote privately on who the next majority leader will be. Senators John Thune of South Dakota, John Cornyn of Texas, and Rick Scott of Florida are the declared candidates that Senators will choose between.

Heritage Action is eager to work with new majorities and a new Senate leader next Congress, while continuing to hold them accountable.
