Special Newsletter

Dear Friends,

The fall of the Berlin Wall was one of the most significant and positive events of the 20th century. Strangers embraced each other in celebration, Berlin partied through the night, and by morning, it was clear that reunification was imminent. In our latest GEGENÜBER article, Heidi Krebs Baier reflects on her personal experience of that historic November 9th and takes us, in a video, to the spot where she and her mother crossed from East to West that night.
In this special edition of our newsletter, we’re also excited to highlight upcoming events this November that promise to be both insightful and transformative.
For students, we’ll be hosting a free media workshop on storytelling and street art during the Thanksgiving break.
For our culturally engaged audience, we warmly invite you to join when distinguished experts discuss the question: Is there an obligation for white majority society to show solidarity to the descendants of enslaved people? This thought-provoking conversation is part of our DOUBLE EXPOSURE event series.

I look forward to welcoming you at the Goethe-Institut Washington!

Heidi's Dream – The Fall of the Wall

In the late 1980s, East Berlin was buzzing with a palpable sense of change, but nothing could have prepared its residents for the historic events of the night of November 9th. When the border to West Berlin opened unexpectedly, it was a moment of shock and celebration. In our latest GEGENÜBER article, Berlin native Heidi offers a personal and captivating account of that unforgettable night—a powerful reflection on a turning point in history. Don’t miss her unique perspective, only in GEGENÜBER.
