Dear Neighbors,

I understand that many of us are feeling disheartened by the recent presidential election results. This is indeed a challenging time, and it’s natural to feel uncertain about the future of our country. However, amidst these feelings of discouragement, let us not forget the incredible power we hold right here in our nation's capital.

In times like these, it is essential that we unite to safeguard our rights and the progress we have tirelessly fought for. We must continue to advocate for what is just—whether it’s affordable housing, healthcare, reproductive rights, education, or the protection of our most vulnerable community members. Our pursuit of justice and equality does not end with a national election; rather, it begins in our neighborhoods and our city.

As your At-Large Councilmember, I am wholeheartedly committed to collaborating with you to forge a better future for all. But remember, you also possess the power to effect change. Your voice is vital, and you can drive transformation by advocating for yourself and your community. Whether it’s speaking at a council hearing, reaching out to my office, or participating in local initiatives, your involvement can influence the policies that directly impact your life.

Let’s transform our disappointment into proactive measures and channel our collective energy into progress. Together, we can ensure that Washington, DC remains a beacon of opportunity, equality, and justice for all.

With hope and determination,
Kenyan

Visit to Martha's Table

Councilmember McDuffie Visits Martha’s Table: A Legacy of Impact and Community Empowerment

It was a privilege to visit Martha’s Table and witness firsthand the incredible progress they’ve made in supporting Washington, DC’s residents. From their roots in providing after-school meals in 1980 to now serving over 30,000 people annually across DC, Martha’s Table continues to be a beacon of hope for families, particularly East of the Anacostia River.

During my visit, I had the opportunity to meet with their President & CEO, Tiffany Williams, and Vice President & Chief of Staff, Mireille Lopez Humes, who shared inspiring stories about the organization’s efforts to broaden the horizons of local youth. Each year, Martha’s Table takes groups of young people on two international trips, where they not only explore and learn about new cultures but also engage in meaningful community service. Whether it’s planting a garden or contributing to other local initiatives, these trips empower youth to make a positive impact both locally and globally.

Martha’s Table also plays a critical role in combating food insecurity by providing fresh, nutritious food to the community on a daily basis. Their commitment to nourishing families is paired with their dedication to early childhood education, offering programs for infants as young as six months old through age four. This holistic approach helps ensure that children are equipped for success from the very beginning of their lives, while their families are supported with the resources they need to thrive.

I am grateful for the ongoing partnership and the recent support for their Pay Equity Fund, which helps ensure fair compensation for our teachers. Their work in early childhood education, healthy food access, mental health, career pathways, and youth development is making a lasting impact. I look forward to exploring new opportunities for collaboration as we work together to help DC residents thrive and build a more stable, prosperous future for all.
DC Green Bank Site Visit

Councilmember McDuffie Tours Affordable Housing Development with DC Green Bank and Jubilee Housing

On Thursday, November 7th, I joined DC Green Bank and Jubilee Housing on a site visit to the Adams Morgan neighborhood in Ward 1 to witness the significant progress being made in expanding affordable housing in Washington, DC. The visit provided an opportunity to learn more about the exciting projects underway, which are not only creating homes for District residents but also advancing a range of crucial priorities — from economic development and workforce development to support for returning citizens and food security.

During the tour, we had the chance to see two in-development projects and hear from Jubilee Housing CEO, Jim Knight, and his team about how these projects are transforming communities. It was clear that DC Green Bank’s work is a game-changer — providing the necessary funding to turn ambitious projects into reality and help move them across the finish line. Through investments in sustainable housing, innovation, and economic mobility, DC Green Bank is making a lasting difference in our city, ensuring that affordable housing and community development are at the forefront of DC’s future.
BAM Fellowship Initiatives - Youth Guidance DC Connect

On Thursday, November 7th, Team McDuffie attended BAM Fellowship Initiatives Youth Guidance Connect event. Shout out to BJ Paige and his hardworking team at BAM-FI for the wonderful work they do in the youth mentoring and development arena, and for the lives of the youth, families, and communities who have benefited from their tireless efforts. A big thank you also goes to Kramer's Bookstore for hosting last night's event honoring the organization and its youth, who are making positive outcomes a reality during a time when many young people are feeling unsure about their future and in need of a guiding light.

Youth Guidance and JPMorgan Chase have combined their signature programs, Becoming A Man (BAM) and The Fellowship Initiative (FI), to deliver a comprehensive counseling, mentoring, and postsecondary readiness program. This partnership empowers young men of color with the tools and confidence they need to succeed personally, academically, and professionally in the District.

The BAM-FI program provides boys and young men of color with guidance, tools, and support to navigate the complex challenges and developmental pathways of adolescence. The program specializes in helping participants overcome barriers such as poverty, housing instability, skill deficiencies, social-emotional challenges, trauma, involvement with the juvenile justice system, and more.

BAM-FI is an evidence-based program that integrates clinical theory and practice. Services and activities for BAM-FI participants include:
* Mental Health & Well-Being
* Academic Support
* Postsecondary Planning
* Civic Leadership & Development
* Summer Internships & Jobs

The anticipated outcomes of the BAM-FI program include a 100% high school graduation rate and a 100% postsecondary education or career pathway for participants.

Each region has an established Advisory Council that guides local leadership and promotes the program's financial sustainability. Council members provide strategic counsel to leadership, champion the program with public, private, and philanthropic sector leaders, and help secure financial support and strategic partnerships.
