In June of 2021, Exodus Cry launched the Protect Children Not Porn campaign. Its central aim has been to get laws passed that would require porn sites to ensure its users are 18+ before they can view explicit content.
Why is protecting children from pornography such a big deal?
The lives of children who are hooked on porn are being dangerously shaped by the sex trade. They’re more likely to sexually assault other children, become victims of sexual abuse, and/or become sex buyers later in life, which fuels trafficking.
Most kids are being exposed by age 11 or younger and, in the US alone, this affects tens of millions of kids.
Ending the injustice of underage exposure to porn is foundational to the safety of our children and the health of our society.
Since we began the Protect Children Not Porn campaign, 37 states have introduced bills to protect children from porn and 19 of them have already passed those laws!
But Pornhub and the Free Speech Coalition, the porn industry’s lobbying organization, are not happy about it and they’re trying to fight back.
They’ve filed lawsuits against multiple states who passed age verification laws, including Texas. Now, the Supreme Court is set to hear the Texas case to determine whether required age verification on porn sites is constitutional.
Our Public Policy Department is hard at work on an amicus brief, a document presenting key information related to a case, to provide the Court with our expertise on the obscene and illegal content hosted on pornographic websites.
Our brief will be submitted to the Supreme Court, together with briefs from other child protection allies, and it will present compelling information on why age verification is critically necessary to protect children.
The Court is set to hear this case January 15 of 2025.
The fact that the Supreme Court is hearing this case is a very big deal and the implications of the ruling will affect every child in the US.
Our campaign has been building to this history-shaping moment and we want to give a huge “thank-you” to every one of you who has signed our petition, watched and shared our film Raised on Porn, and added your voice to this fight for the lives of our children!
We’ll keep you updated on this landmark case.
For freedom,
