Giving Tuesday: Textbooks for Methodist Schools

We're excited to announce our Giving Tuesday focus for 2024: Textbooks for Gileteni Methodist School.
The staff at Gileteni in Inhambane, Mozambique, are in desperate need of textbooks for the 1,450 students at their school. Most of their textbooks are over 15 years old. The school dreams of providing books in English, French and Portuguese for their students ages 12-18. Giving Tuesday funds will help equip the school library with maps, textbooks, dictionaries and more. A $10 donation provides textbooks for one student, and every gift brings us one step closer to filling these classrooms with current, comprehensive textbooks. Learn more and donate →

18,200 People Gained Access to Clean Water
To date in 2024, seven clean-water wells have been completed across Mozambique. Seven more are in progress. All of these wells are solar wells, which include a pump and tower that creates a micro-utility for the surrounding community. Learn more about how solar wells work at this link. The leaders within the Mozambican UMC, drillers and their crews, and your donations all worked together to bring clean water to 18,200 people so far this year. This is amazing! You can find a list of the wells drilled throughout the year in the Fall 2024 Well Report.
Share the Impact of Clean Water
The Mozambique Initiative supports access to safe, clean water in Mozambican communities by drilling hand pump and solar-powered tower wells. The need for clean water is great in Mozambique: About half of the population doesn’t have access to safe water. Hand-pump wells and solar tower wells provide access to this life-saving resource in remote locations.
We’ve created resources, so you can share with your church group how access to clean water is changing lives. Download a one-page info sheet, shareable infographics and more at www.mzinitiative.com/donations/solar-wells
Speaking of Solar ...
Thanks to your generosity, we've continued to install solar panels at UMC pastor parsonages in 2024 and bring light to their ministry. Twelve panel kits have been installed, and 10 are in progress. Check out the map of where we've installed solar panels across Mozambique →
Political Unrest in Mozambique
As you may have seen in the news, political protest has gripped Mozambique in recent days. Many have protested the outcome of the elections that took place on Oct.9. In many cases these protests have escalated with Thursday, Nov. 7, being the largest protests to date. You can read more about the ongoing situation here and here.
You may wish to incorporate this prayer in your Sunday services, small group gatherings or personal devotion in the coming days as we pray with our sisters and brothers in Mozambique:
Gracious God, please hear our cry. Holy Spirit, please restore safety and peace in Mozambique. As people face suffering, danger and even death, we ask Lord that you bring the healing that only you can. Bring peace in the midst of this turmoil, provide safety for your vulnerable people.
Please strengthen the people of the United Methodist Church in Mozambique. Position your Church to be salt and light in the midst of these dangerous times. God, bring justice and truth in ways that restore. Our eyes are on you, Lord. Please provide, sustain and bring hope in these troubled times. We ask all of these things in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.
