“I’m scared as soon as I begin filming” RSF was told by a journalist trapped in the north of the Gaza Strip, in an area representing about a fifth of the Palestinian enclave’s territory. Just a handful of journalists are still covering the deadly offensive there in appalling security conditions and with constant electricity and Internet cuts.

The Israeli authorities persist in making the conditions for journalism impossible in Gaza, doing this in an especially aggressive way in the north of the territory, in practice preventing any image or voice from documenting the ongoing war and the shocking humanitarian conditions imposed on the population. Israel is thereby compromising judicial work, which is based in part on the testimonies of civilian victims recorded by journalists. This information blockade is unacceptable.

RSF condemns the Israeli military’s imposition of this news and information blackout and continues to report all of the state’s failures to international judicial authorities. Since 7 October 2023, the Israeli armed forces have killed more than 140 journalists in Gaza, at least 39 of them in the course of their work.

RSF has taken action in response to this appalling situation. We have opened a centre in Lebanon to provide material and psychological support to journalists in the region, including those covering the war in Gaza. And we have filed four complaints with the International Criminal Court about Israeli war crimes against journalists.
