Dear
SPUC supporter,
On Wednesday night we had our biggest-ever webinar. With over 200 participants, including many medical professionals. The event was organised in collaboration with the Catholic Medical Association and shows the profound interest in Assisted Suicide which exists in this country.

WE HAVE JUST 3 WEEKS LEFT TO ENSURE
THE DEFEAT OF ASSISTED SUICIDE.

If this bill comes into force, it will cross a line that should never be crossed in the medical profession. Whilst this is often portrayed as “mercy killing” make no mistake that it is the thin end of the wedge to a very organised and utilitarian euthanasia program.

The thinking behind assisted suicide is effectively a utilitarianism which only values certain lives, whilst others that are seen as suboptimal are to be disregarded. Many may think that it will be individuals making that decision about their own lives, but we always see that when that line is crossed, it becomes the strong and powerful deciding which lives are to be discarded. The attitude that thinks life has no intrinsic worth is held by a small number of people but they are often in important positions to peddle there ideas. For example best-selling author Yuval Harari, who is a celebrity among world elites, has stated openly:

“There is only a blind evolutionary process, devoid of any purpose, leading to the birth of individuals…there are no such things as rights in biology.”
In the last century we saw where such bleak, materialist views of humanity ultimately lead – to the mass graves of concentration camps. Have we learned nothing in the last 80 years? Are we really suggesting a return to organising society on these principles?

Only a view of life which sees EVERY life as unique and sacred can withstand the onslaught of the eugenicists. This is because, as soon as you make the exception, the whole edifice is under threat.

Once the sacredness of human life has been demoted, there is only one route – and that is to an ever-greater distinction between “useless” and “worthy” lives. This is why doctors until recently always had to say the Hippocratic Oath, which so beautifully proclaims:
“I will never harm my suffering friend.”

Please help us keep the flame of Life alive!
