Celebrations as Oldham's exciting new food hall opens on borough's 175th birthday

Jim McMahon, MP for Oldham West, Royton and Chadderton, led guests in wishing the borough of Oldham a happy 175th birthday at the launch of the new go-to premier food and drink venue The Egyptian Room.

Mr McMahon was joined at the historic opening by Council Leader Cllr Arooj Shah, the Mayor of Oldham Cllr Zahid Chauhan and Joe Foster, Managing Director of Northern Lights Group who have transformed the formerly derelict Old Town Hall building into a contemporary food hall.

The MP had the vision for the Grade II-listed building on Yorkshire Street when he was the leader of Oldham Council.

He said at the launch: “The responsibility that we have is to make sure that the next generation have the heritage and history of the town and I think to open this today on Oldham's birthday, we're not only celebrating the borough of Oldham's birthday we're celebrating the heritage.”

Cllr Shah said “He had a vision, and that vision was to make use of something that was unloved and derelict for a long time.”

Physical immigration documents are going digital – you may need to take action

The UK Government is replacing physical immigration documents with digital proof of immigration status called an eVisa.

This electronic record of a person’s immigration status- removes the need for physical documents and are a key part of delivering a border and immigration system which will be ‘digital by default’ by 2025.

People in the UK currently using a physical immigration document, such as a biometric residence permit (BRP) or a legacy paper document such as a passport containing an ink stamp or a vignette sticker, will now need to create a UKVI account to access their eVisa, and it's free and straightforward.

Visit www.gov.uk/evisa and if you need support contact the government’s appointed help service, Migrant Help via [email protected] or by calling 07483 170100.

Learn to Burn Better this winter

Do you use a log burner, stove or an have an open fire? This winter, it’s important to find out how to burn safely.

Fire smoke releases tiny particles that can damage everyone’s health. Even the cleanest eco-burners produce air pollution.

There may be healthier, greener and cheaper ways to keep your home warm this winter and not burning – or reducing your burning – is best.

But if you have to burn at home, following a few simple tips and rules will help you burn better and more safely:

•    Choose clean fuels like dry wood and smokeless coal.
•    Look for the ‘Ready to Burn’ logo on bagged fuel.
•    Keep your appliance and chimney clean.

Most areas of Greater Manchester have Smoke Control Areas. There are rules in place about what you can burn at home, to protect our health and the environment.
