Dear Friend of MCV,

As the week comes to a close and the dust settles on the elections, the consequences for the environment, democracy, and climate are coming into clearer focus. Our team is recalibrating and preparing to defend protections for air, land, and water at the federal level and continue to advance climate action at the state level.

First, we’re not going to sugarcoat what a Trump presidency will mean for the health of the planet. He has pledged to gut environmental protections and pave the way for corporate polluters to expand oil and gas drilling on day one. At a time when climate scientists are clear that the world must rapidly reduce - not increase - carbon pollution, a Trump presidency will be devastating.

We also know that Trump’s agenda is out of step with people in Maine who want their government to take strong action to cut carbon pollution and help communities prepare for the serious effects of climate change like flooding and storms. As we face a new political reality, we are more committed than ever to stepping up to defend the progress we’ve made at the federal level so that future generations can thrive.

Second, Maine people returned pro-environment majorities to the State House and Senate. I am proud of the smart campaigns MCV Action Fund ran in key legislative districts to educate and mobilize voters to support pro-conservation candidates. Despite the hostile wave that swept much of the country, we were able to help return a pro-environment majority to the state legislature - just as the Maine Climate Council is preparing to present the state’s next four-year climate action plan.

There is hard work ahead. With members like you, we’ll keep advocating for and defending clean air, land, and water and the people who depend on them. We will keep organizing and fighting for a more sustainable future for our children. And, we’ll be calling on you to write letters, sign petitions, and speak up for a livable planet.

As we process the new political landscape, I am finding comfort in the community we’ve created and in the natural world around us. As Mary Oliver advises, I will “take my busy heart to the forest” to build reserves for the battles ahead. Thank you for your partnership as we face these challenges together.

In solidarity,
