The results of the recent U.S. presidential elections mean that Donald Trump is returning to the White House in January. You might be wondering, how does that impact humanitarian aid for women and girls?

Well, right now, the U.S. government is currently funding UNFPA at record-high levels and is one of our largest donors.

But the U.S. president has a tremendous amount of power over funding for UNFPA, making any transition of power a time of uncertainty for us. In fact, with the stroke of a pen, a president can eliminate ALL U.S. governmental funding for UNFPA.

We desperately hope that the incoming Trump Administration will see the value in UNFPA’s lifesaving programs and continue supporting women and girls around the world. But the truth is, President Trump defunded UNFPA the last time he was in office and is extremely likely to do so again.

Funding from the U.S. government is hugely consequential to programs for women and girls around the world. In 2023 alone, U.S. funding enabled UNFPA care and services to reach 3,066,005 women and girls.
