At Farm Sanctuary, we believe that all turkeys (and all animals) deserve a “pardon” from a life of suffering in animal agriculture. These sentient beings have done nothing wrong, and they deserve kindness.
In an annual tradition that dates back to industry lobbyists, the President of the United States “pardons” two live turkeys ahead of Thanksgiving.
The birds are not slaughtered for the holiday season like 46 million others, nor do they go on to a life of sanctuary. Sadly, pardoned turkeys are often sent to farms and petting zoos or to universities where they are used in research—places where they often suffer unseen by the public. To the best of our knowledge, no bird has ever been sent to a sanctuary.
