** Government's tobacco and vape restrictions gain backing from health groups and MPs

The Tobacco and Vapes Bill, aimed at phasing out tobacco for younger generations, has garnered significant support from health charities, policymakers, and various public health advocates. The bill proposes to incrementally raise the legal smoking age, eventually preventing the purchasing of tobacco. Additional measures include stricter vape regulations, extended smokefree areas, and potential bans on vaping in certain public spaces. Supporters argue that these steps are essential to reducing preventable illnesses linked to tobacco and protecting young people from nicotine addiction. The legislation enjoys cross-party backing and aligns with efforts to address health disparities that smoking often exacerbates.

** NHS trust aims to enforce smoke-free hospital grounds by 2026

The University Hospitals of North Midlands (UHNM) trust is setting a goal to prohibit smoking across all hospital sites by 2026. In response to ongoing issues with people smoking at building entrances, despite existing no-smoking signage, UHNM's Chief Executive Simon Constable highlighted that significant measures would be needed to achieve the ban effectively. The trust plans to engage with staff and visitors to encourage support and cooperation, offering targeted cessation resources for patients, staff, and visitors to manage tobacco dependency.

** Mobile lung cancer screening detects early-stage cases in thousands

An NHS programme deploying mobile screening units to community sites like supermarkets and stadiums has detected early-stage lung cancer in over 5,000 people in England. The initiative, launched in 2019, focuses on areas with high rates of the disease and targets current and former smokers aged 55 to 74. With mobile clinics operating long hours and on weekends, the initiative provides flexible access to vital scans, significantly increasing early detection. Early diagnosis greatly improves survival rates, with patients nearly 20 times more likely to survive five years when cancer is caught in the earliest stages. Health experts are urging eligible individuals to attend screenings, highlighting the programme's role in saving lives and its expansion plans to reach nationwide coverage by 2030.

** Ireland moves to raise tobacco sale age to 21

Ireland's Public Health (Tobacco) (Amendment) Bill 2024, which aims to increase the legal age for purchasing tobacco to 21, has passed through the Oireachtas and is now awaiting the president’s signature. If signed, the law will take effect on 1 February 2028, allowing a transition period to ensure current buyers aged 18 to 20 are not affected. The law will extend existing penalties for illegal tobacco sales to those under 21, including fines and potential imprisonment.

This measure is part of a broader public health initiative aimed at reducing adult smoking rates and achieving zero smoking prevalence among youth, building on Ireland’s history of pioneering anti-smoking laws since its workplace smoking ban in 2004. Officials, including the Minister for Health and the Chief Medical Officer, have voiced strong support, emphasising the health benefits for young adults and the potential for reducing tobacco-related disease. Ireland is set to become the first EU nation to implement this higher minimum age for tobacco sales.
