He argued that Fulton, which in April assumed responsibility for substantially all of Republic's deposits, should think of itself as having taken on not only the failed bank's financial liabilities, but also its legal and reputational liabilities. Van Tol pointed out that Fulton now operates Republic's New Jersey branches, which the attorney general's office said were concentrated in predominantly white areas.
