Donald Trump's last term in the White House saw the development of new nuclear weapons and the ripping up of nuclear treaties. In the four years since, Joe Biden has done nothing to reverse this, ploughing ahead with nuclear modernisation and the planned deployment of new nuclear weapons to Europe, including RAF Lakenheath in Britain.?
?
From Ukraine to the Middle East and Asia-Pacific, Trump's return will be to a world of increased nuclear threats and growing militarisation. Speaking outside the US Embassy on Wednesday, CND General Secretary Sophie Bolt warned that while Trump claims he will be the president to stop wars rather than start them, the reality will be anything but.

RAF Lakenheath national demonstration
?
Thank you to everyone who joined us at RAF Lakenheath last Saturday, our fourth national demonstration at the base since we learned of the planned return of US nuclear bombs to the base since 2008. A sister demonstration by Scottish CND also took place outside the Royal Navy's nuclear base at Faslane, linking the dangers that both US and British nuclear weapons pose to this country.
?
We were delighted to be joined by Melissa Parke, Executive Director of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, who spoke about the dangers of NATO nuclear sharing and nuclear escalation in Europe. A gallery of photos from the day can be found here.?

This week it was reported that the first phase of upgrade works at the base have been completed. The second phase, which is subject to a CND legal challenge, will include the building of a new dormitory to house US Air Force personnel for a future nuclear weapons mission.??
?
CND is keeping up the pressure and will be back for another national mobilisation at the base in April 2025. Please check out our events pages for details of monthly vigils organised by Lakenheath Alliance for Peace.?
?
Public meetings on the return of US nuclear weapons to Britain are also being organised by local CND groups - with events in Oxford and Swansea scheduled for November.
