<[link removed]> Muslims for Progressive Values’ 2024 Post Election Statement November 6, 2024 As Muslims for Progressive Values, we stand united in our profound sadness and disappointment following the results of this election. Donald Trump's win is not simply a political outcome; it is a symbol of the undercurrents of fear, division, and bigotry that have taken hold of parts of this nation. But as we reflect on this moment, we are reminded of the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who said, “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice.” We know that our work, our voices, and our determination to uphold justice will not be silenced or diminished by one setback. A significant number of Muslims cast their votes for Trump in this election, driven in part by conservative values around gender and LGBTQ+ rights. While many were motivated by the ongoing war in Gaza and the Biden administration's inaction, this choice reflects deeper cultural divides within our community, including a resistance to the growing recognition of women’s rights and LGBTQ+ equality. As a progressive organization, we are committed to fostering greater understanding and challenging beliefs that marginalize others. This election is a call to reflect on our own values and ensure that they align with justice and human rights for all people. We recognize the gravity of this election for many people in our community who are now more vulnerable than ever. This outcome has left us with a renewed commitment to support and protect those who may be marginalized, discriminated against, or unfairly targeted. As Malcolm X once said, “If you’re not ready to die for it, take the word ‘freedom’ out of your vocabulary.” We will fight fiercely, peacefully, and strategically to safeguard the freedoms of all individuals in this country, and we will stand as an ally to every community that finds itself under threat. Now is the time to resist despair. Now is the time to reaffirm our commitment to progress, equality, and human rights. We call on our members, allies, and supporters to join us in making our collective voice heard, louder than ever, in the face of adversity. Together, we will hold this administration accountable to the values we cherish. We will not allow hatred to define this country, and we will not let fear silence our courage. Being a Muslim is not a passive act - it means actively upholding and protecting values such as justice and equality. “O believers! Stand firm for justice as witnesses for god, even if it is against yourselves, your parents, or close relatives.” Quran 4:135. As we look to the days ahead, we find resolve in the words of Maya Angelou: “You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them.” Muslims for Progressive Values remains steadfast, with renewed dedication to the fight for justice, equality, and freedom for all.
