James — Bernie issued his statement on the election, and he didn’t mince words. Bernie went directly after the failures of the Democratic Party:
“It should come as no great surprise that a Democratic Party which has abandoned working class people would find that the working class has abandoned them…While the Democratic Party leadership defends the status quo, the American people are angry and want change.”
Our post-election survey shows our supporters are feeling the way Bernie does. 76% of our survey respondents believe the Democratic Party has lost its way, and even more of our supporters feel Democrats neglected the working class.
We will be working with our movement and progressive champions like Bernie to chart our path to resist the right-wing extremism of the next Trump term AND fundamentally change the Democratic Party.

If the Democratic Party leaned into the economic priorities of the working class, it could’ve blunted Trump’s ability to increase his support amongst working class Latinos in 2020 AND 2024. If these trends continue, and the DNC ignores them, it could be an electoral checkmate. It’s a big reason why Bernie is not happy with what Democrats did during this campaign.
Bernie said, “Will the big money interests and well-paid consultants who control the Democratic Party learn any real lessons from this disastrous campaign? Will they understand the pain and political alienation that tens of millions of Americans are experiencing? Do they have any ideas as to how we can take on the increasingly powerful Oligarchy which has so much economic and political power? Probably not.”

Our survey respondents said they’re most fearful of how Trump will empower ultra-rich oligarchs like Elon Musk, roll back women’s rights and abortion rights, give even more tax breaks to the rich, and weaponize the government against the people.
It’s on us right now to strategize as a grassroots progressive movement and find a path forward. We must fight Trumpism and the billionaire class. We must build for a future where Democrats embrace the economic and social issues that make a winning coalition AND a material difference in the lives of the tens of millions of Americans living paycheck to paycheck.
