Team —
In just a few moments, I am going to ask you to make a donation to my campaign committee. I hope you'll give me a chance to explain why this request — especially today — is so important.
As you may know, when I was a child, I had a severe illness that put me in the hospital for three months. Even though I fully recovered, my grandparents, who raised me, were unable to get me insurance at any price because I had this previous illness.
Like 133 million Americans, I know what it's like to have the label "pre-existing condition" attached to my care, and before the Affordable Care Act passed, many of us could be denied coverage.
So, you can imagine my frustration when Republicans continue beating the drum on repealing the law — including its protections — if they win back the House and keep the White House in 2020.
I got into public service because I saw my grandparents stay up nights, worried sick that I would fall ill again and they wouldn't be able to afford my care. No one should ever have to go through that. The ACA finally addressed this problem. It was one of the law's core achievements.
But if Republicans have their way, millions of Americans could find themselves in a place where insurers would deny their coverage at any price — because that was the sort of discriminatory practice we saw before the law was passed.
Let's be clear about one thing: Republicans have no plan to protect people with pre-existing conditions. They never have. They never will.
Folks like you deserve leaders who work tirelessly to ensure every single person has access to quality, affordable health care, regardless of whether or not they have a pre-existing condition. I am going to keep fighting to make sure we get those leaders elected, but I need your support.
I am not going to let anyone make me forget where I came from or why I got into public service in the first place. So long as you're with me, I know we can overcome any challenge we may face, elect Democrats up and down the ballot, and stop Republicans from taking away health insurance from millions of Americans.
Thank you for standing with me.
