John,
I want to say thank you. It was incredible to see Democrats of all backgrounds unite themselves behind Kamala Harris and her promise of a brighter, more hopeful way forward for our nation.
While I join the tens of millions of Americans who are disappointed that Vice President Harris’s vision for America will not come to fruition, I am inspired by the joy and support I saw her campaign receive.
Though Tuesday’s results were not what we hoped they’d be, there are still signs of America’s commitment to progress and change. Angela Alsobrooks and Lisa Blunt Rochester became the fourth and fifth Black women to ever serve in the Senate. And this will mark the first time two Black women will serve in the Senate together.
New Jersey’s Andy Kim will be the first Korean-American Senator. And Sarah McBride is now the first openly transgender person to serve in Congress. I hope that even in the midst of our concern for this new administration, we can take time to celebrate what we did accomplish.
My belief in our country will never waiver, no matter who is in office. As a United States Senator, I remain committed to ensuring liberty and equality for all Americans, and that our democracy is protected. I hope you will remain committed to that fight with me too.
Sincerely,
Sen. Dick Durbin
