Dear members and supporters,

We know that our loved ones, members, national and international allies, and constituencies are reeling in a mixture of emotions this week, as both the popular and electoral U.S. vote will put a racist, misogynist, xenophobic, and narcissist authoritarian back into power. While many states passed progressive initiatives like legalization of abortion access, the Democrats lost seats as a result of running toward the right instead of supporting an arms embargo against Israel and listening deeply to the material needs of their base. 

We have lived under this before, but we know this time will be dramatically and intensely different with a Republican majority in the Senate. The MAGA right in government will weaponize its control to advance its extreme anti-state, anti-immigrant, anti-choice, anti-climate justice, and anti-LGBTQ+ agenda. We also know they won’t have more moderate Republicans in the new administration to leverage any checks or balances. We cannot pretend that any of this situation is good. 

But what we do know is that we have each other, the organizations that we built over decades, our relationships with strategic allies, and resources to use wisely. Our main task now is to lean into supporting our members, communities, and the people who carry deep fear about what the future holds under a Trump regime. We must not succumb to isolation, despair, or political disorientation. We need to be clear about our power — where we have it, where we don’t — and what is required to build seriously in this next era. 

We know that some of what we as the Left are doing is not enough to stop a genocide, stop an authoritarian getting back into power, stop the senseless deaths of people denied abortions, and stop the impacts of climate change. But we must bring our best selves forward and be emotionally grounded, united, and strategic. We need to play our role as an alliance in the movement ecosystem and work together to prepare the groundwork for resistance — and fight like hell to never be in this place again. 

In the days ahead, GGJ will engage deeply with our allies and members to shape our role in this new political conjuncture. We are resolved to keep our communities safe, to build the power of the grassroots Left through mobilization, transformative organizing, and our campaigns, and to name and advance our vision of the world we deserve.

We believe in people power, the collective power that we and our allies are building nationally and internationally. We believe we can and must rise into this new moment to bring forth a future rooted in care, justice, and liberation for all.

Querides miembros y partidaries,

Sabemos que nuestros seres queridos, miembros, aliades nacionales e internacionales y constituyentes están sintiendo una mezcla de emociones esta semana, después de que el voto popular y electoral de EE.UU. volvió a poner a un autoritario racista, misógino, xenófobo y narcisista en poder. Si bien muchos estados aprobaron iniciativas progresistas como la legalización del acceso al aborto, los demócratas perdieron escaños como resultado de lanzarse hacia la derecha en vez de apoyar un embargo de armas contra Israel y escuchar profundamente las necesidades materiales de su base.

Ya hemos vivido bajo esto, pero sabemos que esta vez será dramática e intensamente diferente con una mayoría republicana en el Senado. La derecha MAGA en el gobierno utilizará su control como un arma para avanzar su agenda extrema anti-estado, anti-inmigrantes, anti-elección, anti-justicia climática y anti-LGBTQ+. También sabemos que no habrán más republicanos moderados en la administración nueva para actuar como mecanismos de control. No podemos pretender que ninguna parte de esta situación es buena.

Pero lo que sí sabemos es que nos tenemos a nosotres mismes, a las organizaciones que hemos construido durante décadas, nuestras relaciones con aliades estratégicxs y recursos a usar sabiamente. Nuestra tarea primordial es apoyar a nuestros miembros, comunidades y gente que teme profundamente lo que le depara el futuro bajo un régimen de Trump. No debemos sucumbir al aislamiento, la desesperación o la desorientación política. Debemos tener claridad respecto a nuestro poder — dónde lo tenemos, dónde no — y qué hace falta para construir seriamente en esta próxima era.

Sabemos que parte que lo que estamos haciendo como “izquierda” no es suficiente para frenar un genocidio, frenar que un autoritario regrese al poder, frenar las muertes sin sentido de gente a quien se le niega un aborto y frenar los impactos del cambio climático. Pero debemos ofrecer lo mejor de nosotres y estar emocionalmente arraigades, unificarnos y actuar con estrategia. Debemos desempeñar nuestro papel como alianza en el ecosistema del movimiento y trabajar juntes para preparar el terreno para la resistencia — y luchar con todo lo que tenemos para jamás encontrarnos en este lugar de nuevo.

En los próximos días, GGJ trabajará profundamente con nuestres aliades y miembros para moldear nuestro papel en esta nueva coyuntura política. Estamos decidides a mantener a nuestras comunidades seguras, a desarrollar el poder de la izquierda de la base a través de la movilización, el trabajo organizador transformativo y nuestras campañas, y nombrar y avanzar nuestra visión del mundo que merecemos.

Creemos en el poder del pueblo, en el poder colectivo que estamos desarrollando nacional e internacionalmente junto con nuestres aliades. Creemos que podemos y debemos estar a la altura de este momento nuevo para dar luz a un futuro arraigado en el cuidado, la justicia y la liberación para todes.
