As the US elections come to a close, and we process the results alongside you, I want to share what I told CPJ staff on Wednesday morning: No matter what the future holds, CPJ will continue working toward a world where a free press is protected, and democracy is upheld.

The challenges we face are profound. Our research ahead of the election highlighted that the hostile media climate fostered during Donald Trump's first presidency remains, and there are early signs it may get worse. Journalists in the U.S. could face retaliatory violence, lawsuits, and online harassment.

But we haven't been idle. Before the election, we provided over 700 journalists with essential physical and digital safety training, helped shape and advance the PRESS Act, a bipartisan bill to protect journalists from surveillance and forced source disclosure, and urged both presidential candidates to support a climate that values press freedom in the U.S. and abroad.

These efforts reflect the steadfast commitment you can expect from CPJ in the days and years to come. We draw upon a robust coalition of press freedom organizations, and, with over four decades of experience supporting journalists in some of the world's most dangerous regions, we are prepared to meet this moment with resolve.

But we can't do it alone. The stakes for press freedom in the U.S. and around the world are higher than ever. As our board emphasized in their post-election statement, a free press is a cornerstone of democracy, essential to public safety and accountability. Every gift strengthens our work, enabling us to train, protect, and advocate for journalists who speak truth to power in an increasingly hostile environment. We need your help now, more than ever, to ensure a free press prevails as a pillar of democracy.

If you share our commitment to press freedom, please consider standing with us by making a gift today. Together, we can ensure that no matter what challenges arise, journalists everywhere can continue their essential work.

Thank you for standing with us and for supporting the future of journalism.

Warm regards,

Jodie Ginsberg
