The Maine Forest Service is mourning the tragic loss of retired MFS District Forester Bob Leso, in a traffic accident earlier this week. We extend our sincere condolences to his family on their loss.
Over his remarkable 36-year career, Bob’s dedication and commitment to Maine's woodlands, and to the many people involved in the stewardship of the forest, have left an enduring legacy. His journey was a testament to the power of service, beginning with his service in the armed forces, his early work in the Peace Corps in Peru and continuing through decades of unwavering support for our state’s forested communities through his work as one of Maine’s longest-serving District Foresters.
Bob exemplified what it means to work with people, generously sharing his knowledge, time, and deep respect for the land. Small woodland owners in Franklin and Somerset counties, where he spent his whole career, benefited tremendously from his guidance, which he offered with kindness and humility. He was a long-time member of the Maine Tree Farm Committee, as well as a Tree Farm inspector, and was still serving as the Franklin County Tree Farm chair at the time of his passing. His radio appearances on “The Grapevine,” his winter workshops, and countless hours walking woodlots with landowners reflect a life spent fostering stewardship and care for Maine’s natural resources. Moreover, Bob was a generous colleague, offering support and advice to others whenever asked. He had a quiet good humor and a ready smile.
Bob's legacy lives on in the thriving woodlands and empowered landowners he inspired throughout his career. We honor his contributions and offer our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and all who worked with him. His presence will be missed but not forgotten among the trees he cherished and the communities he faithfully served.
A wake will be held at Wiles Funeral Home on Monday, November 18, from 4-6. A funeral service is planned for Tuesday, November 19, at 9 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Farmington.

Join us for a tour of a 50-acre woodland whose owner is interested in managing the property for wildlife habitat.
The program will discuss the make up of the woods, the practices that can enhance wildlife activity, and opportunities that the IF&W program, “Beginning with Habitat,” can offer to help landowners develop managing plans that reflect their wildlife priorities. Presenters will include Joe Roy, Private lands biologist with the Maine Inland Fisheries & Wildlife, and Merle Ring, a retired Maine State Forester.
