Dear John,
As we await final election tallies for the House of Representatives, we are taking stock of the challenges ahead for shareholders. We’ve been here before. In 2016, the SEC severely restricted rules on shareholder advocacy, made responsible investing more difficult, and generally gave companies contributing to climate change and injustice a pass.
Our response now, as then, was to come together as a community and stand firm. To remain vigilant and positive
in working with companies to create long-term value and reduce risk, while building our momentum in creating a safe, just, and sustainable world for all.
In the face of what’s ahead, we know that we will need to be even more nimble and innovative in maintaining the freedom to make rational and fully informed investment decisions. We will demand that corporate leaders and fiduciaries look at the data that drives sound and sustainable decision-making.
We will mobilize shareholders to claim their right to invest in alignment with value and their values; to create a future that includes a livable planet on which to spend their retirements. We will educate and organize every shareholder to claim the power of their proxy vote and send a message to corporate boardrooms – politics may change, but the expectation that corporations will play their part in creating a more
sustainable and just world does not.
Together, with your support and partnership, As You Sow will continue to execute our mission of reducing the impacts of climate change, defending the rights of nature, and standing up for justice in its many forms.
We are agonizingly aware of the obstacles ahead. We know the coming years will be beyond challenging. Real change is made by the people who refuse to give up even when the odds seem insurmountable. And while today may feel overwhelming, we are crystal clear that our values and our vision of the future are not only possible – but necessary.
This is our strength. This moment calls us to escalate our commitment to justice, to the planet, and to each other. We are ready for that challenge.
If you feel uncertain about the road ahead, you are not alone. This is the moment
to strengthen our alliances, to link arms, and plan our actions on a long time horizon. We have faced adversity before and emerged stronger. Our work is essential and unstoppable as we take the next step on the path toward a safe, just, and sustainable world for all.
We welcome your support in every way. | | | | | | Danielle Fugere, President | |
