John,
From the bottom of my heart, thank you for believing in me and sending me back to Congress.
Thanks to you and the hard work of so many volunteers, donors, and members of our campaign team, I am honored and humbled to be heading back to the People’s House to continue to represent you as we fight for economic, racial, social, and environmental justice.
As you’ve seen, Donald Trump will again be president. I pushed to hold him accountable before getting into Congress, and once I was elected, I led on impeaching Trump from day one. Unfortunately, he was able to secure a far-right majority on the U.S. Supreme Court, taking away our rights such as the nationwide right to abortion. A second Trump term will be disastrous for our communities, and we need to push President Biden to do as much as possible in his final months in office. I want you to know that I will be standing alongside all of you as we fight to mitigate the harm Trump will cause to our Black, brown, LGBTQ+, immigrant, and working class neighbors.
Together, we will never stop holding the powerful accountable in our struggle for human dignity for all people—including ending the genocide of the Palestinian people. When I asked my yama (mom) why she voted, she said: “Because they can’t erase us.” No matter what is ahead, we won’t let those in power silence us and ignore the needs of our communities. Everyday people have felt like our government is not listening to their voices, and we will keep fighting for a government that truly represents the people—not the billionaires or corporations.
Over the last 7 weeks of the election, our team contacted 40,000 voters in Michigan’s 12th congressional district through door knocking, phone calls, texts, postcards, letters, and events―boosting turnout for Democrats up and down the ballot. On Election Day alone we made 20,000 phone calls. Direct human contact and increasing voter turnout is how we make sure our democracy is stronger and made up of all of us, and we won’t stop directly connecting with our neighbors.
I ran for Congress in 2018 to lift up the voices of people in my community. Now I’m heading into my fourth term in Congress to continue representing my neighbors in Michigan’s 12th congressional district. Here are some of our accomplishments so far:
Through our Neighborhood Service Centers in the district, our team has now resolved around 9,000 cases for constituents seeking help with veterans’ services, immigration issues, Social Security and disability benefits, securing back pay, and more—bringing more than $6.1 million directly back to our residents. We’ve also secured over $57 million in federal funding for 25 local community projects, including $7 million to replace dangerous lead service lines and support the right to clean water.
Between 2019 and 2024, I passed 40 bills and amendments (out of 160 introduced), including legislation to remediate toxic PFAS chemicals, remove medically necessary debt from credit reports, expand homeownership opportunities, increase renewable energy funding, increase suicide prevention for veterans, and provide $23 billion to replace dangerous lead-contaminated water pipes as well as $1.1 billion to stop water shutoffs.
The policies we introduce are developed in partnership with our constituents, and as I head into my next term in Congress, I will continue to push for bold changes to end poverty, take on corporate greed, and help working class people thrive, not just survive.
As Grace Lee Boggs taught me, change does not begin with the people in power, change begins on the streets when we build multi-racial, multi-faith coalitions. In the past year alone, we raised and donated over $152,000 for grassroots nonprofit organizations―all thanks to folks like you, John.
Thanks to you and other members of our movement, we recently raised over $35,000 for Palestine Legal to support their legal advocacy for people speaking out for Palestine. As repression against activists will likely increase, we will continue to show up for one another and build our movements for progressive change.
Thank you for being by my side. Together, we continue the struggle for justice and equity for all.
Always in Service,
Rashida
