We are excited to announce that Shawn Fain, president of the United Auto Workers (UAW), will be our keynote speaker on Friday, December 6, during the morning plenary at Race and Power! Friday’s day-long theme is centered around one of the key words in our Summit theme—Persistence in our fight to secure the Beloved Community. The morning plenary includes music and art, a panel of faith and labor leaders, and—of course—our keynote speaker.
President Fain will focus on the intersectionality of faith and labor and the need to build strong coalitions across labor, faith, and community if our shared values are to drive the agenda in this country. The plenary will be followed by an interactive lunch for labor and faith leaders present at the Summit!
The first democratically elected president of the UAW, President Fain led a historic labor strike against the Big Three Automakers (Stellantis, General Motors, and Ford) less than a year after assuming the presidency in 2023. That victory was followed by another historic victory for organized labor in May 2024 when workers at the Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, voted overwhelmingly to join the United Auto Workers, becoming the first Southern autoworkers outside of the Big Three to win their union. Gamaliel affiliate in Chattanooga, CALEB, worked closely with President Fain’s team to secure the union.
If you haven’t registered yet for our 5th Biennial Race and Power in America Summit, do it now. The deadline to register—November 15—is fast approaching!
In solidarity,
Ana Garcia-Ashley, Executive Director
