The UN climate talks (COP29) begin in Baku next week, and people around the world are getting organised for the global day of action for climate justice on Saturday 16 November.

Actions are set to take place across the UK and worldwide – will you join us?

Local groups and activists across the UK will be taking to the streets and heading into their communities to demand the government ends our reliance on fossil fuels, pays up for climate finance, and ends its complicity in Israel’s escalating genocidal violence.

Record heat in our atmosphere and oceans is driving climate disasters across the globe, with those who’ve done the least to cause this crisis suffering most. Global north countries have far exceeded their fair share of the earth’s carrying capacity and are primarily responsible for the climate crisis.
Against this backdrop, Israel’s deadly assault has killed at least 42,000 Palestinians over the last year and displaced more than 90% of Gaza’s population. Every semblance of decency and humanity has been violated with absolute impunity, with the most well-documented genocide in history unfolding before our very eyes.
At COP29 in November, the UK government will make claims to climate leadership. But these will ring hollow if the government continues to funnel public money into militarism, war and fossil fuel projects.
The same fossil fuel corporations driving the climate crisis and blocking a just transition are those funnelling Israel the oil it needs for its war machine: all to secure their profits. If we’re to have any hope of a liveable planet, we must divest from war and destruction – and invest in a just, ecological and equitable transition.
At least 16 actions have already been planned across the UK, with more still being added to the map. I’m personally excited to be joining Climate Action Durham to talk about the global call for a Fossil Fuel Treaty and a just transition to renewables. There will be a mass mobilisation in London, and Global Justice Now local groups are also involved in actions in Portsmouth and Cambridge.

With this week’s news that one of the world’s most dangerously prolific climate deniers will soon be returning to the White House, it is more important than ever that we stand up and show up for climate justice, and for the opportunity to build a better, fairer and more sustainable world, for communities around the world and generations to come.
