Dear friend — I want to talk to you candidly today.

Donald Trump has won the presidency. Again. For those of us in this progressive movement and those who care deeply for our democracy, the last 48 hours have been completely devastating and demoralizing.

And I won’t sugarcoat it. A majority of the American people turned their back on the Democratic Party’s vision of the future on Tuesday and embraced an increasingly extremist far-right movement led by Donald Trump.

We have a lot to learn about how we fell so far short, especially with working class voters of all backgrounds. And while we do that soul-searching, we face down another four years with Trump in the White House.

But I want you to hear this from me: The road ahead is tough, but we must walk it. Together.

With so much on the line under a second Trump administration, we don’t have the privilege to give up, to go home, and to stop paying attention.

Immigrant communities face threats of mass deportations. A national abortion ban could be put before Congress. The clock could get turned back on the progress we’ve made on climate change. Israel will no doubt be emboldened to continue to its genocide in Palestine with Trump’s support.

It’s going to be up to us — grassroots progressive organizers and the movement we’ve built together — to stand against the coming Trump agenda. And I will continue to do everything I can as a member of Congress to oppose that agenda wherever and whenever I can.

Don’t forget, after all, that despite a Republican trifecta in 2017 and 2018, we were able to protect the Affordable Care Act, protect our undocumented neighbors, and eventually take back the House.

Like I said friend, I won’t sugarcoat it. The next four years are going to be tough. We have so much work to do to rebuild trust with working class voters, voters of color, and young voters.

And in that work we have an opportunity to shape the future of the Democratic party, to turn it towards a truly inspiring vision for prosperity and justice for all that regular folks can believe in.

If you’re ready to get started, make a contribution of any amount to my campaign today. Today is Day 1 of our fight against the Trump agenda.

I will always be on the side of justice, even as our democracy itself is under threat. I hope you’re with me.

In solidarity,
Ilhan Omar
