Business email compromise (BEC) is any criminal impersonation involving business email accounts (as opposed to free personal email accounts like gmail, yahoo, etc). The FBI calls it “one of the most financially damaging online crimes” with annual reports putting losses for businesses related to BEC at over $2.5B. That’s up around 700% from 2016, a staggering number meaning that this threat will likely only get worse in the small to medium-sized business (SMB) space.
In this Small Business Roundtable, Phillip Steuber, Co-Founder and Operations Director of Codex Computer Services will define BEC in depth, provide examples of recent cases, and offer ways for small businesses to prevent it from happening to them.
