A message from Council Leader, Councillor Neghat Khan

*Remembrance Sunday & Armistice Day*

I will be taking part in the traditional Remembrance Service on Sunday 10 November at the city's war memorial at Victoria Embankment. The ceremony will begin at 10.45am and include the two-minute silence and wreath laying. The Nottinghamshire Band of The Royal Engineers, accompanied by the Nottingham Hospitals Choir, will provide music for the service. People wishing to pay their respects and observe the ceremony are very welcome to join us.

To mark Armistice Day, a short Service of Remembrance will take place on the steps of the Council House on Monday 11 November. Commencing at 10.55am with the two-minute silence at 11am, there will be a reading and prayer by the Bishop of Sherwood, The Rt Revd Dr Andrew Emerton, and the Last Post will be played on the bugle by a student from Nottingham High School. I will be attending and I hope members of the public will join us to pay their respects.

HSF

Household Support Fund applications now open

Applications have now opened for vulnerable residents in Nottingham to apply for energy support and supermarket vouchers as part of the Household Support Fund (HSF) scheme.

Vouchers will have a monthly application limit with a new batch of vouchers opened at the start of each month from November to March 2025, subject to availability.

The following support will be available by application to vulnerable households:


* Energy Support Vouchers – 2 x £49 PayPoint Vouchers.
* Supermarket Vouchers – 1 x £75 Supermarket Voucher.
* Free School Meals Vouchers – for October, Christmas and February holiday periods.
* Food Funding for Food Banks and other support projects across the city.

Have your say on proposed changes to the Council Tax Support scheme

The Council is consulting on future options for its Council Tax Support Scheme affecting working age people.  

Council Tax Support is a discount which helps households on low incomes with their Council Tax bill. Around 19% of households in Nottingham are in receipt of Council Tax Support and the scheme costs over £30 million a year to operate. Applying the discount affects the amount of Council Tax the Council receives and has an impact on the amount of Council Tax that all households in the city pay. 

The scheme has not been reviewed since it started in 2013, despite changes to Welfare Benefits and Council funding over this period. Like all Local Authorities, the Council has several financial challenges. The proposals enable the Council to provide a scheme that is financially sustainable in future years. 

The aim is to have a scheme that continues to support those on the lowest incomes and is future proofed in terms of its cost. 

The proposals do not affect the Council Tax Support Scheme for pensioner households, the rules for which are controlled by Central Government. 

The proposed changes to the Scheme will affect all working age (under state pension age) households. 

We would like to hear your view on the proposals which if agreed will be implemented in April 2025.

Diwali at the Castle

Celebrate Diwali at Nottingham Castle this Saturday from 1pm-3pm. Talented students from Nottingham Trent University will showcase classic and contemporary music and dance, capturing the essence of the rich musical heritage of Diwali. There will also be performances from Bollywood saxophonist Saryu Thakrar, international singer and guitarist Charles Anthony, artist Ankita Sethi, and students from the Nottingham Asian Arts Council.

There’s also a new ‘Katha’ exhibition opening this Friday. Nottingham City Museum curators have been working with Nottingham Trent University, where each student has interpreted an individual object from Indian Collections, to form the basis of a spotlight exhibition for Diwali.

Castle standard admission applies – pay once, visit all year round. Adults £15, kids go free (up to 15 years, 3 per paying adult).

Christmas Market at the Castle

The It’s in Nottingham Christmas Market returns to Nottingham Castle on Saturday 30 November and Sunday 1 December!

This year, the market is bigger and better than ever before with more than 70 independent trader stalls, live entertainment, and plenty of activities for the whole family. Best of all, it’s set against the stunning backdrop of Nottingham Castle, creating a truly special experience.

Entry is £1 per person (plus booking fee) for tickets booked in advance, but hurry as they’re selling fast! On-the-day entry will be charged at the standard £15 admission if there is capacity.

Djanogly Community Leisure Centre gym grand reopening

Djanogly Community Leisure Centre will reopen its doors to the gyms tomorrow, where trainers from Life Fitness will be on hand to help customers with the new equipment. Members will also be invited to bring along a friend for free on the day.

The revamp will feature premium equipment from Life Fitness, Hammer Strength, and ICG ®, which is suitable for all training interests and fitness levels. Additionally, the centre will join an exclusive group of UK to feature Symbio™ Cardio, which will take fitness journeys to the next level.

The new kit will also feature immersive digital experiences with cardio consoles, a functional zone and environmentally-friendly Green Zones with self-powered equipment.

To tie in with the reopening, residents will be able to take advantage of special joining offers* which include:


* 10% discount on an annual Active Nottingham membership
* No joining fee on a rolling monthly membership
* 50% discount on the first month when signing up for a 12-month agreement
