I joined the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) five years ago after spending 12 years at the Federal Veterans Affairs in VISN 23. Hired as the Clinical Director, I worked closely with Paula Newinski, former Quality Director, and together we worked with leadership to further the work that had been started in quality clinical care at all Minnesota Veterans Homes. As a Certified Hospice and Palliative Care Nurse for 24 years, I brought a passion for end-of-life care and went on to pursue my certification in Ethics Consultation.
It was a big step for me to leave the Federal VA to come to the State Veterans Homes, but it was a positive change. What drew me to the Minnesota Veterans Homes was the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) quality scores, the passion for improved care for Veterans, the long-term state support of the program, and most importantly the staff and leaders here, many who also had previously worked at the VA. Understanding that the state would be building three new nursing homes drove the planning and preparation for several years. Seeing each new Home open and begin serving Residents has been very rewarding for me.
My husband Randy and I moved to the Minneapolis area eight years ago from Fargo, North Dakota where my three grown children, their spouses and one precious grandchild live. The move to Minnesota, the change of jobs/careers and meeting and getting to know many of those who have dedicated their lives and careers to MDVA has been rich and rewarding. Thank you to all the devoted staff who come to work every day and make the Minnesota Veterans Homes a premium place for Veterans to live.
