Dear John,
Like many of you, I’m deeply disappointed by the outcome of this election. President-elect Trump’s actions over the past decade have harmed countless communities, and his second term threatens our rights, values, and democracy itself. There’s no denying it—what lies ahead will be incredibly challenging.
As your Council Member and Progressive Caucus Co-chair, I am committed to defending the rights of all New Yorkers. Over the past two terms, I’ve fought tirelessly for issues that matter to working families: advocating for rent rollback protections for tenants, investing millions in affordable housing and homeownership, leading the fight for universal composting, and expanding abortion access. I also helped establish groundbreaking programs like Promise NYC for immigrant families and authored the Immigrant Workers Bill of Rights.
Time and time again, residents of District 39 have stood at the forefront, celebrating diversity, championing civil liberties, and consistently leading the charge to protect our communities and our values. We will continue advancing racial, gender, immigrant, and LGBTQ+ justice; pushing for affordable childcare, fully funded schools, affordable housing, healthcare, and good jobs; and advocating for reproductive rights, climate justice, and a public safety system that works for everyone. My team and I remain committed to providing responsive constituent services and ensuring that our neighborhoods are heard.
I’m encouraged by the overwhelming support for Prop 1, which enshrines abortion rights and anti-discrimination protections through the Equal Rights Amendment. This constitutional amendment reinforces New York State’s role as a sanctuary for reproductive freedom, for New Yorkers, and for those seeking care from states with restrictive laws.
However, the passage of anti-democratic Proposals 2-5 raises serious concerns about the consolidation of power by Mayor Adams. These changes will threaten the City Council’s ability to pass transformative legislation. Despite this setback, with the leadership of our Speaker Adrienne Adams, the Council remains resolute in our commitment to addressing the needs that matter most to our communities.
The election results highlight the urgent need for organizing and building stronger communities—far beyond the ballot box. I encourage all New Yorkers to stay engaged, get involved, and to not back down from holding our government accountable. Together, we will show the nation what an inclusive, representative democracy truly looks like.
I am honored to stand with you as we write the next chapter of our political resistance and fight for a better future.
In solidarity,
Council Member Shahana
