Dear John,

Here are my thoughts the day after Election Day:

First and foremost, thank you! Thank you for your powerful vote that gave us another four years to work for Washingtonians. I love this work, and I cannot imagine a bigger blessing than the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others. Gratitude!

Second, I need to address the elephant in the room . . .

I know that many of you are reeling from last night's national election results. Truthfully, so am I and we all need some time to just process this.

I think about what Michelle Obama said before the election to those who were deeply concerned and anxious. She said: "Do something!"

Even as we process these results, or thereafter, her admonition still seems like wise advice.

Look: elections have consequences. They certainly will this time. I'm concerned about a whole host of things, from the future of the I-5 Bridge Replacement Project to what will happen in Ukraine – and everything in between.

But for my part, I'm going to focus on that which I can control and "do something." There is so much we can do to help strengthen our local schools and increase the efficacy of our city and county governments . Of course, our state government can do a great deal and voters last night certainly supported the progress we've made.

For example, I am excited to continue our work on housing and the effort to build more homes — of all kinds, but especially affordable housing — for all our neighbors. And I am excited to continue our work to promote more civility in the public square. We need it now more than ever.

For me, focusing on the "somethings" I can do (to mangle Michelle Obama's words) is the best course forward.

So, for now, let's process — take the time to let ourselves feel and express — and focus on that which we can control or influence.
