We won.

The Associated Press declared us the winner; we currently lead with more than 57 percent of the vote. Last night, my Republican opponent, State Senator Drew MacEwen, called to concede our race in Washington’s 6th Congressional District.

John, I will have the distinct honor and privilege to serve you in Congress!

Since we launched our campaign nearly a year ago, I’ve been overwhelmed and overjoyed by the outpouring of grassroots support. We assembled an unbeatable team of motivated volunteers. We knocked on 10,000+ doors and made 20,000+ phone calls, including 6,000+ to swing states. And with nearly 10,000 grassroots donors, we showed that you can run a robust race for federal office without a dime of Corporate PAC money.

It’s not lost on me that we did more than win this election: we made history. Together, we shattered three glass ceilings. When I take office in January, I will become the first woman and first person of color to hold this seat, the first openly LGBTQ+ person to represent Washington state in Congress, and the first ever queer Latina member of Congress.

But representation isn’t the only reason I ran for this office. I ran to improve my neighbors’ lives. I ran to protect our abortion rights and expand access to quality healthcare. I ran to lower the cost of living and make housing more affordable. I ran to create new jobs and new educational opportunities.

I ran because I know our best days are ahead of us, but only when we are willing to work together to find real solutions for our neighbors, friends, and families.

The news nationally is more grim.

Shortly after I take office, Donald Trump will return as the 47th President of the United States. His victory is a threat to the fundamental rights and liberties of countless Americans. Among other issues, he represents an existential threat to abortion and birth control access.

The 6th District elected me to fight for their rights no matter who the President is, and I will join my colleagues in holding Trump and his administration accountable every day I am in office.

Thank you to all of you who made a donation, knocked on doors, made calls, spread the word on social media, or sent a supportive note. Thank you for the hard work, the time, the hope, and the joy you have invested in this campaign. I can’t wait to get to work and bring ALL your voices into the halls of power in the “other Washington.”

It is the honor of my life to serve the people of Washington — first in the State Senate and now in the U.S. Congress. Thank you to everyone who has supported our campaign, and thank you most of all to my wife, Alison, who made this victory possible.

In service,

— Congresswoman-elect Emily Randall
