United States: Freedom House Urges Recommitment to Democratic Principles After Trump Election Victory

The incoming president faces the difficult task of uniting a polarized country and navigating a world in great need of democratic leadership.
WASHINGTON—In response to the election of Donald Trump to a second term as president of the United States, Freedom House interim president Nicole Bibbins Sedaca issued the following statement:
“Yesterday, more than 71 million Americans voted to reelect Donald Trump as president of the United States in a free and fair process. President-elect Trump will have the weighty responsibility of governing a politically polarized country in a world that is in great need of American democratic leadership.
“The incoming president of the United States, and all of the other newly elected federal, state, and local leaders from both major political parties, have been entrusted with the difficult work of uniting a divided electorate, protecting the rights of all Americans, and prioritizing the needs of the country as a whole over narrow partisan or personal interests. To fulfill these tasks and retain public confidence, they must uphold our constitution and the rule of law, which ultimately guarantee our individual liberties.
“While American democracy has proven resilient during its long history, it has nevertheless experienced backsliding over the last decade, owing to factors including partisan pressure on the electoral process and the rule of law, severe political polarization, and growing economic and other disparities. Democracy also faces challenges abroad, including widening armed conflicts, efforts by authoritarian-minded elected leaders to undermine democratic institutions, the rampant spread of false information, and aggression by powerful authoritarian regimes.
“President-elect Trump will take office at a critical time, when American leadership on the world stage will help determine the expansion or retreat of democracy, the defense or erosion of fundamental freedoms, and the protection of or damage to America’s own economic and security interests. We urge President-elect Trump and congressional leaders to place democracy and human rights at the core of US foreign policy, and to take steps to strengthen democracy at home so that the United States will continue to serve as a beacon of hope to the world.
“Freedom House will continue its nonpartisan work and collaboration with partners in government and civil society, at home and abroad, in the shared mission of advancing human rights and defending freedom, and it will hold all leaders accountable for their adherence to the principles of democracy.”
