John,
There’s no sugarcoating how painful it is to be a Texas progressive right now. Our movement— our people—suffered a massive loss yesterday.
Like many of you, we are looking for silver linings today. Possibilities of change. Hope for what we can build together.
Here’s how Ground Game succeeded in five Texas cities yesterday:
In Dallas, our Proposition R, to decriminalize misdemeanor marijuana possession, passed with a supermajority of 67% to 33%.
In McAllen, our Proposition A, to adopt campaign contribution limits, passed 56% to 44%, and our Proposition B, to grant local voters the direct democracy powers of initiative, referendum, and recall, passed 67% to 33%.
In Amarillo, where a grassroots organization, Amarillo Reproductive Freedom Alliance, hired Ground Game to manage the campaign against Proposition A, an anti-abortion, “sanctuary city for the unborn” ordinance, we were able to defeat the measure by 18% (41% yes, 59% no).
In Lockhart, our Proposition A, to decriminalize misdemeanor marijuana possession, passed 68% to 32%.
In Bastrop, our Proposition M, to decriminalize misdemeanor marijuana possession, passed 70% to 30%.
Progressive issues won in these five cities, even with the strong headwinds of state and national politics. We remain convinced that investing in local issue-based organizing is the path forward. We must build political infrastructure, step by step, to create the future we deserve.
Please consider becoming a recurring donor to Ground Game Texas. If you can give $5, $25, or $100 per month, you can help us continue to grow and expand our progressive organizing, and build the foundation for victories tomorrow.
With love and determination,
Catina Voellinger (she/her), Executive Director
