John,
Yesterday’s election brought a mix of victories and challenges for our ranked choice voting (RCV) movement. We’re thrilled to share that we won the effort to preserve RCV in Bloomington (51%-49%) and that pro-RCV ballot measures prevailed in Washington, D.C., Oak Park and Peoria, IL, marking continued progress at the local level.
However, we faced setbacks in other parts of the country, with the failure of statewide RCV ballot measures in Oregon, Idaho, Nevada, and Colorado and a successful effort to ban RCV in Missouri. We are still waiting for results in Alaska, where there is an effort to repeal RCV. (See national updates here [[link removed]] and here [[link removed]] .)
On the home front, we are excited that many of our endorsed pro-RCV candidates won their elections, but we unfortunately did not secure the pro-RCV majority in the Minnesota legislature we aimed for. We lost advocates in critical swing districts, including Winona and St. Peter. We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to every RCV champion who ran for office and to those who won. Your dedication and commitment to a stronger, fairer democracy inspire us all and we look forward to working with all of you to continue to find ways to protect and expand our democracy.
We also want to thank all the volunteers and supporters who knocked, made phone calls, and donated to elect pro-RCV candidates and preserve RCV in Bloomington.
While yesterday's results weren’t everything we hoped for, our work is far from over. Together, we will keep pushing forward to expand and protect RCV. In light of the continued threats to our democracy underscored by this election’s outcome, advancing RCV is more critical than ever to push back against extremist forces and ensure a diverse and inclusive democracy for all. Your support has been, and will continue to be, crucial as we fight for a system that truly represents the will of the people.
Stay tuned for more updates, and thank you for being an essential part of this movement.
With gratitude and determination,
Jeanne Massey
