Dear John,

With heavy hearts, we are processing the difficult news that Donald Trump has won the presidency once more. Despite many millions of votes cast for Vice President Harris, Trump has secured another term. It’s the moment we all feared most, yet it’s also a moment we’re prepared to meet.

First and foremost, hear this: we will not stop fighting. This may feel similar to Election Night in 2016, but the truth is that we are light years ahead of where we were. Together, we have spent eight years strengthening our grassroots infrastructure for the fight ahead. Every dollar, every call, every postcard, and every door knock has built a movement that will withstand the setbacks of this night and continue pushing forward. The fight for democracy doesn’t end here—state legislatures are more important than ever. Together, we’ll regroup, strategize, and keep pushing forward to protect our values and communities.

We made it through the one Trump term, and we will make it through another. Depending on how you’re feeling, now might be a time for self-care, or it might be a time for action. Here at Sister District, we are ready to continue fighting – and we’d be grateful for your support. Or, perhaps you’re ready to take the next step and volunteer with your local chapter. No matter what, we are standing with you.

And even though Trump will see another four years in the presidency, Democrats managed to hold their ground in many key state legislative races. Our organizing efforts resulted in wins and chamber shifts that will positively impact the lives of people.

Votes are still being counted, and some margins are razor-thin. Our candidate Woodson Bradley running for the North Carolina Senate is up by just 27 votes. Her race will head to an automatic recount, and it is a powerful reminder of the close margins that characterize the districts we endorse, and how every inch matters.

We are likely to lose our single-seat majority in the Michigan House, and this is a very hard loss. But our wins also resulted in important chamber victories. In North Carolina, our candidates successfully broke the House GOP supermajority. With Democrat Josh Stein winning the governorship (along with a Democratic sweep of all statewide races!), we’ve restored veto power to block extreme legislation on issues like abortion and voting rights. We also maintained control of the Minnesota Senate with a key special election victory. In Wisconsin, we won all of our key targets in the Senate, putting us on track to win the seats we need when the other half of the chamber is up in 2026.

While a full analysis will come in the following weeks and months, this much is clear: state legislatures will play a crucial role in providing a check on Trump’s policies, particularly as the conservative majority on the Supreme Court continues to return more power to the states.

The wins we do have are more important now than ever, and we cannot lose sight of that. They happened because you worked every day to get us here. Our GOTV numbers are still coming in, but Sister District volunteers raised more than $1.8 million directly to candidates and State Bridges partners, made an unbelievable 2 million phone calls (our most phone calls ever!), sent nearly 85,000 postcards, and knocked more than 6,000 doors. And because we know that the fight for our future is permanent, Sister District is also committed to supporting lawmakers, community-based partners, and conducting research that strengthens the ecosystem for the long-term.

This is a heavy moment in our nation’s history, but it’s not the end of our fight. Our history proves that change will continue to happen when we are persistent, strategic, and ever hopeful. What you have done, and will continue to do, will move us forward on this journey.

We are so incredibly proud of this community, and we know that together, we will survive the next four years.
