Hi team,
Today, I’m sharing the deep devastation that I know millions of Americans are feeling.
It’s staggering and heart-wrenching to realize how many of our fellow citizens across the country leaned into racism, sexism, xenophobia, and homophobia with this election, and that we could once more be in a moment defined by such hatred.
Our country has been here before, but this time the fight will be harder with a stacked Supreme Court and emboldened, climate-denying leadership.
Now, the last lines of defense for the well-being of our country and for climate action are the House of Representatives and California’s leadership. We’ve known that this responsibility would come down to our state.
Because ballots can be postmarked by Election Day, it will take weeks, not days, to get final results for some of these competitive congressional races in California—and we need to stay patient as we wait to ensure that every vote is counted.
Trump’s decisive win is painful and scary, especially for those who have repeatedly been targets of his abuse. As the fifth largest economy in the world and home to 12% of Americans, California will have an incredible role to play—not just in defending against attacks, but also in fighting back, pushing forward aggressively, and lighting the way for state and global action on climate justice and preserving our democracy.
There will be more to say and do in the coming days—but for today, we encourage you to spend time with loved ones, get out in nature, and take care of yourself as we collectively process this grief.
Thank you for being in this fight with us.
