Today, Donald Trump has for the second time been elected President of the United States. Atlanta DSA stands unequivocally opposed to his presidency and all that it represents – racism, white supremacy, misogyny, transphobia, islamophobia, and the interests of the capitalist class. The time is now to act! Socialists have a responsibility to oppose fascism in all its forms, and we are ready to stand united with workers, immigrants, trans people, and other oppressed communities to fight back against his administration, and for our rights, and continue organizing to build a mass, multi-racial movement of the working class.
A second Trump presidency means that we must organize starting now to fight back against terrible right-wing policies like a federal abortion ban, national right-to-work laws, attacks on trans healthcare, and mass deportations of immigrants. It also means we need to be ready to fight back against heightened oppression against the Left and protest movements, including organizations like DSA, the Stop Cop City movement, and Palestine organizers. Finally, it is likely Trump will only escalate and try to “finish the job” with respect to the terrible, ongoing genocide in Gaza – which has already caused the death of tens of thousands of innocent families and children. In this moment, our task is to unite the left and labor movements against Trump and MAGA ideology, to defend abortion and trans rights, stop the deportations, free Palestine, and build progressive, militant union power.
Let’s be clear – the Democrats had an opportunity in this election to excite a young, progressive base by changing their tune on Gaza, fighting for popular class-struggle reforms like Medicare for All and a Green New Deal, or canceling student debt. Instead, they doubled down on the war on Gaza, made alliances with right-wing warmongers like Dick Cheney, and shifted far to the right on immigration policy. The Democrats lost because, for decades now, they have failed to meet the moment to respond to the deeply and widely felt popular demands like universal healthcare - including the right to abortion - or to speak to the economic issues, wealth inequality, and skyrocketing prices that have impacted the livelihoods of millions of people across the country. This election, the two-party system has shown its severe limitations, which is why DSA is organizing, not just to oppose the fascist Trump regime, but to build long-term power for the multi-racial working class, elect class-struggle Democratic Socialist candidates like Gabriel Sanchez to office, and build a labor movement powerful enough to bring the capitalist class to its knees.
Right now, it’s easy to feel helpless, scared, anxious, and alone. But you are not alone – the entire working class is in this together. The ruling class often uses moments of crisis and fear to turn the working class on itself, but we must stand strong and identify racism, bigotry, and corporate greed as the real enemies to overcome. While the Democrats have dropped the ball, DSA is winning local elections from Portland to Louisville to Atlanta, we are building power in our workplaces, and we are taking to the streets. Together, we can chart a new path forward to fight for a Green New Deal, Medicare for All, Free Palestine, and an end to imperialist war. Let’s organize to unite workers of all backgrounds to take on Trump, elect socialists to office, fight the fascist right, and build a strong and militant labor movement capable of carrying out a general strike on May 1st, 2028. To do it, we need you in this fight with us. Join DSA to help us build a mass movement – beyond the election cycle – to win universal healthcare, housing for all, and the green socialist future we all deserve.
