Donald Trump’s victory is a win for the global far-right

Hi John,

Donald Trump has won the US election.

As I write, he’s taken the swing states of North Carolina, Georgia and Pennsylvania and his route to victory is clear.

Donald Trump’s victory is a win for the global far-right, and will embolden extremists, dictators and anti-democratic forces around the world.

It will set back the campaign to halt climate change, and empower nationalists and those who want to disregard our human rights.

It’s also a victory for people on our side of the pond. Like convicted criminal Tommy Robinson or Nigel Farage, who Trump declared had “always been his friend’ at a rally this week.

Trump has already dangerously transformed the Republican party and dragged it to the far right. It’s clear that the next four years will be a testing time for democracy and civil rights in the US and across the world.

John, our capacity to hope is being challenged. But today's news must be a mobilsing moment for us all, John. We cannot lose hope.

Of course we need to take stock of the result, what caused it and what we need to do to prevent the same from happening here. But we also need to stand together and stand firm.

HOPE not hate was built on the idea that ordinary people have the power to create a better world, a world where HOPE is more powerful than hate.

So whilst today, we reflect on this loss, we must start rebuilding.

HOPE not hate will be here - today, tomorrow and in the future. The struggle for a better world has been made harder by Trump’s victory, but it is one that we can never give up on and ultimately one that we can win.

Thank you for your support,

Georgie
