First, Florida voters rejected the corporate-drafted Amendment 3 which would’ve legalized recreational marijuana in the sunshine state. The SAM coalition worked hand in glove with our partners in Florida, including Florida Governor Ron Desantis, to defeat this amendment.
The opposition spent over $150 million, making this one of the most expensive ballot measures in American history, but this movement you’ve helped us build did not fall. Please consider contributing to our efforts.
Next, voters in North Dakota defeated legalization for the third straight cycle. Yes, marijuana has been on the ballot for the last 6 years and North Dakotans have yet again handily rejected it. Likewise, voters in South Dakota rejected legalization this year after defeating it twice in the last two cycles.
Not only that, but in Massachusetts, despite being outspent by more than 10 to 1, voters rejected the legalization of psychedelics, the new frontier for addiction-for-profit schemes.
It’s clear the industry isn’t giving up, but neither are we.
Tonight was huge for the citizens of these states who will now not have to suffer the consequences of drugs in their communities, but it’s also huge because we’re turning the tide on public opinion. Our work educating the public on the harms of legalization is working; just recently a Gallup poll found that nearly 60% of those surveyed believe marijuana is harmful for individuals and communities.
We can’t do this work without people like you. SAM continues to do a lot with a little, and we have never and will never take any money from pharmaceutical companies, tobacco companies, or alcohol companies. We're funded largely by people like you. When you donate to SAM, you're helping us get the word out about the harms of marijuana to parents, kids, and lawmakers.
Your generosity is how we can continue our work, so please consider donating today.
