It's Election Day, folks. As the first polls start to close, disinformation will spread far and wide. Regardless of the vote totals, lies about this election are going to pop up.

That's why it's so important to understand that democracy takes time. Vote totals are going to fluctuate tonight, and probably for the next few days.

NextGen is dedicated to bringing you the most accurate Election Day information. So here's what you need to know about vote counting in battleground states:

- Pennsylvania and North Carolina are legally forbidden from counting mail-in ballots before election night. While some ballots may have been processed early in certain localities, the vote counts will not be updated until after the polls close. In 2020, this led to some candidates having large leads in Pennsylvania that quickly eroded once mail-in votes were tallied.

- Nevada was among the states that took the longest time to tally votes in 2020. This year, however, they were able to start counting mail-in ballots on October 21 instead of waiting for Election Day. Results will not be released until the very last vote has been cast.

- Michigan has updated its procedures to allow more time to count mail-in ballots. So it's possible that a candidate with an early lead can see it narrow as more early votes are counted.

- Arizona will release its first batch of election results at 10:00 p.m. ET. That includes mail-in ballots and early in-person votes.

If you've never voted before, it may be easy to expect results by bedtime. But realistically, we could be waiting a few days before any winners are announced.

And that's okay.

While we're waiting for the results to roll in, take our voter suppression quiz today and see if you know everything there is to know about our right to vote: [link removed]
