Dear John xxxxxx,

Today, alongside Common, Imagine Justice and more than 70 organizations ([link removed]) , we launched the #WeMatterToo ([link removed]) campaign, calling for more people to be freed from jails, prisons, and detention centers across America. Every day that goes by without action means more people will get sick with COVID-19 and die. COVID-19’s deadly impact on our nation’s more than 2.3 million incarcerated people as well as the thousands of individuals who work at the facilities is already underway.

The first installment of the #WeMatterToo campaign starts with this short film ([link removed]) , featuring the voices of #OurCommunity members who are currently incarcerated around the country expressing their fears and concerns during this COVID-19 pandemic.

The name of the #WeMatterToo movement is derived from this powerful image ([link removed]) written on the inside of a jail window by a person incarcerated at Cook County Jail: HELP. WE MATTER 2. We honor him and other people who are currently incarcerated during this global pandemic by fighting to improve conditions inside our nation’s jails, prisons and detention centers and calling on those in power to free more incarcerated people, especially those who are at highest risk for COVID-19.

Jails and prisons do not exist outside of the broader community. What happens in jails and prisons reflects and impacts the broader society. #WeMatterToo is an ongoing campaign that kicks off with the release of the short film and several virtual activations including a special music and poetry showcase, multiple panel discussions, a fireside chat and more. Additionally, #WeMatterToo will continuously release new original content on the issue as well as content from #WeMatterToo Coalition Partners. Produced in collaboration between Anti-Recidivism Coalition (ARC), Imagine Justice, and the MacArthur Foundation, the short film is directed by filmmaker Savanah Leaf, produced by Park Pictures and executive produced by Common.
